The Preacher- Alien Chant (Italy, 2017)
Reykjavik Collective Sound Design Exhibition 02.12.2017-23.12.2017
In information theory, noise possesses a very specific set of connotations, or even rules. In this theory, noise has been isolated to the different occasions in which the static, linear notion of transmitting information is interrupted. In the digital, these interruptions can be subdivided into glitch, encoding / decoding (of which in digital compression is the most ordinary form) and feedback artefacts. The Preacher is a sound design experience by pioneer artist Maurizio Gavazzi based in Bergamo, a city next to Milan in Italy. His work promotes the aesthetic, conceptual and philosophical potential of sound- capture, amplification, and the virtues of both acoustic and synthetic spatialisation. Gavazzi works with specific custom instrumentation. Most recently concerned with ideas of ‘phonogeny’ (as a parallel to photogeny) in sound recording and producing works for instrumentalising reverbs. The complexity of the sound, engineered and mixed in Los Angeles by JS Studio, the binaural beats, sculptural waves, a strange altered effect of perception. The Preacher is a surprise, a pearl. An incredible pattern of mixed sound from nowhere.
